Helen (Bigda) Beres

Of West Mifflin, PA formerly of Munhall, PA on September 29, 2017 (age 89). Devoted wife of the late Michael Bernard Beres. Loving mother of David (Pat Ondish) Beres and Leslie (Michael Sochka) Beres-Sochka. Grandmother of Ashley Beres, Elizabeth Sochka, Krystal Chonko, the late Amanda Chonko, and Justin (Amanda) Chonko. Daughter of the late Elizabeth Bigda and George Magalla; Godmother of Audrey (Zatorsky) Rajakovich and Donald Lau; also survived by many cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends.

Helen was born in Homestead on June 28, 1928. She was a lifelong member of Saint Nicholas Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church in Homestead. She graduated with honors from Munhall High School. After graduation, she worked for Western Bell Telephone as an operator and then as a switchboard supervisor and trainer. Tootsie, as she was known, was a faithful member of Saint Nicholas Church and participated in many church and civic activities. She was a member of the Senior ACRY, a volunteer for both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, a Distinguished Diocesan Donor, a member of the Munhall School District Parent Teacher Association, an Allegheny County Election Judge, a founding member of the St. Nicholas Church School, and, along with her husband Michael Beres, was recognized with a Diocesan Gramota for lifelong service to both parish and diocese.

Family and friends will be received at the Savolskis-Wasik-Glenn Funeral Home Inc., 3501 Main Street, Munhall, PA 15120 on Thursday and Friday 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM.  A Funeral Service will be held Friday 7:00 PM at the funeral home.  A Divine Liturgy will be held Saturday, 10:00 AM at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church (MEET AT THE CHURCH) 903 Ann Street Homestead, PA 15120 followed by burial at St. Nicholas Cemetery in West Mifflin and a repast. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make contributions to Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church. May Helen’s memory be eternal!
