Michael Bernard Beres

Of West Mifflin, PA formerly of Munhall, PA on August 20, 2017 (age 89). Devoted husband of Helen (Bigda) Beres. Loving father of David (Pat Ondish) Beres and Leslie (Michael Sochka) Beres-Sochka. Grandfather of Ashley Beres, Elizabeth Sochka, Krystal Chonko, the late Amanda Chonko, and Justin (Amanda) Chonko. Son of the late John Jr. and Mary (Martcinchak) Beres, Jr.; brother of the late Mary (Michael) Labick, John (Pearl) Beres, Andrew (Georgette) Beres, George Beres, Ann (Joseph) Kelly, and Joseph Beres (who died as a young boy); also survived by many cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends. Michael was born in Homestead on March 22, 1928, the youngest of seven children. He was a lifelong member of Saint Nicholas Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church in Homestead, which his parents helped found and build. He graduated from Homestead High School. Before graduation, he served in the United States Army, where he fought in the Korean War, served in the Signal Corps, and attained the rank of Corporal. After his honorable discharge and return home, Mickey, as he was known, finished high school and worked at US Steel, initially in Open Hearth 5, just a short distance from where he was born and later in the payroll department at the US Steel South Side office building. His career spanned forty-two years until his retirement. As a faithful member of Saint Nicholas Church he participated in many parish and diocesan activities. He was a member of the Board of Directors, the Curaders, Senior ACRY, Boy Scout Troop 8, the Distinguished Diocesan Donors, and along with his wife Helen was recognized with a Diocesan Gramota for his lifelong service to both parish and diocese. Family and friends will be received at the SAVOLSKIS-WASIK-GLENN FUNERAL HOME INC., 3501 Main Street, Munhall, PA 15120 on Thursday and Friday 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM.  A Funeral Service will be held Friday 7:00 PM at the funeral home.  A Divine Liturgy will be held Saturday, 10:00 AM at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church 903 Ann Street Homestead, PA 15120 EVERYONE PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH.  Burial to follow at St. Nicholas Cemetery in West Mifflin and a repast. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make contributions to Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church. May Michael’s memory be eternal!
