Albert "Sonny" Fitz Jr. Obituary

Albert "Sonny" Eugene Fitz Jr., age 82, passed away peacefully at home in Thurmont, Maryland, on May 24, 2026. He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Margaret Fitz, in-laws Leroy and Opal Hamilton, sister-in-law, Bettie Fitz, and several uncles and cousins.

Born on March 24, 1944, in Homestead, Pennsylvania, Albert was the son of Albert and Margaret (Kohut) Fitz. He graduated from West Mifflin North High School before proudly serving his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Sproston (DD-577).

As a young adult, Albert often said that the two most important events of his life were joining the Navy and meeting the love of his life while stationed in Hawaii in 1964. Those experiences shaped the course of his future. Everyone who knew him understood how deeply he cherished both his service and his beloved wife, Barbara, along with their three children and nine grandchildren.

After his service in the Navy, Albert began a distinguished career in information technology, starting as a programmer working with NASA on the historic Apollo XI mission, the first successful lunar landing. He was also instrumental in several early information technology initiatives at the Defense Logistics Agency. He later transitioned into IT sales, where he enjoyed a long and successful career with Oracle. Throughout his years working across Pennsylvania and Maryland, Albert earned a reputation as a dedicated, dependable professional who was respected by colleagues and clients alike before retiring several years ago.

Albert always had a warm smile, an unforgettable laugh, and a steady presence he brought to everyone around him. He was a man who taught his children and grandchildren the value of hard work, kindness, loyalty, and perseverance. He was well known for making his grandchildren laugh and smile with his great sense of humor. He enjoyed spending time with family and took great pride in watching his children and grandchildren grow.

He is survived by his bride of 59 years, Barbara Lee (Hamilton) Fitz, his brother, Dennis Fitz, brother-in-laws Ken Hamilton (Renee) and Terry Hamilton (Denise); his sons, Steven (Lisa), David (Christine), and John (Michelle); and his beloved grandchildren Ashley Wright (Gabe), Faith and Ethan, Gina and Nate, Shane, Scott, Eric, Emma, and Kira; as well as several cousins, nephews, and nieces.
