David Paul Smith

David Paul Smith, 84, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, passed away on June 4, 2023.

David was born on January 18, 1939 to Paul and Alice (Cole) Smith in Cortland, New York. 

He loved sports, enjoying Little League Baseball (including the great memory of playing during a Little League baseball tournament in Cooperstown) and high school sports. After graduating from Dryden High School, he studied economics at Ohio State. 

David went to work for the Insurance Company of North America, starting his long career in the insurance field, eventually working for Adams & Son Inc. in Auburn and CSI in Syracuse.

In 1968, David met and married Joyce (Gilson) Smith. They lived in Central New York until David retired, moving to Pittsburgh in 2016. 

David was active in the Apple Valley United Methodist Church in South Onondaga, New York.  He coached and umpired Little League, and served as Cub Scout Pack leader. David was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling to historical sites with his family. 

David is predeceased by his parents and his brother Jerry. He is survived by Joyce, his wife of 54 years; his sister Pat (Smith) Chaplin; his four children, Rev. Adam Smith and wife Catherine (Reistrom) Smith, Douglas Smith, Dr. Ernest Smith, Elizabeth (Smith) Warner and her husband Ray Warner; David’s seven grandchildren, Corissa Smith, Shaina (Smith) Pike and her husband Nick Pike, Elizabeth Warner, Aaron Smith, Alex Warner, Amy Smith, and Dawn Warner; and two great grandsons, Dawson Pike and Dean Pike. 

The family is planning a private Celebration of Life.
