Hank Somma, formerly of Murrysville, PA, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Monday, August 14, 2023. Hank was born in Pittsburgh, son of the late Louis and Rose Somma. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ann, his brother Joseph, and sister Nicoletta.
Hank was the president and founder of Three Rivers Design Service, Inc., an engineering and drafting company located in Pittsburgh.
As a resident of Murrysville, Hank was elected to the Board of Directors of Heather Highlands Civic Association. He also owned a women’s clothing boutique along with his wife Mary Ann, in the center of Murrysville where their interaction with customers enabled them to get to know-and enjoy those who lived in the tight-knit community.
His passion for life and curious nature resulted in numerous interests and hobbies. After the passing of his wife, Hank took up photography and his work was soon recognized throughout Pittsburgh and abroad. His first submitted work as a photographer, a portrait of two women entitled “Two on a Rail,” captured the 1984 Kodak Pittsburgh Press Grand Prize Award in black and white. His work appeared in local, national, and global publications including World Vision, Pittsburgh Magazine, Pitt Magazine, Northwest Airlines In-Flight Magazine, Primo Magazine, The Josephite Priests Harvest Magazine, and Mothering Magazine. Hank’s photo shoots took him to visually-rich locations such as Italy, Thailand, Indonesia, Jamaica, Japan, and the Philippines.
In his later years, Hank settled in Georgia. While there, he was elected to the position of Grand Knight, of the Knights of Columbus. He also served as Deputy Grand Knight and Membership Director. He was the District Warden of the Knights Of Columbus, Georgia State Council No.11. Somma was elected to the Pastoral Council, at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Georgia.
In his retirement years, Hank discovered a passion for motorcycle riding and owned a Harley Davidson. This newfound passion took him on Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) sanctioned state rallies throughout the south. He was a writer, photographer and authority on the Harley Biker H.O.G. Life Style and held the positions of Photographer and Historian for ten years at Harley Davidson of Atlanta, Dealership H.O.G. Chapter.
Most importantly, he was loved by his wife Mary Ann of twenty-five years and was a dedicated father, mentor, and friend to his daughters Rose, Julia, Maryann, and Sandy. Hank cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren James, Michael, David, Curtis, and Lena. A private ceremony will be held to celebrate Hank’s life.
