Irene E. Betz Obituary

Irene E. (Barto) Betz passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 26, 2025 at Eldercrest Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

Born on December 31, 1929 in Duquesne, she was a daughter to the late Andrew and Elizabeth Barto. She married her best friend, James W. Betz, in 1956 and together they raised two children. She was very proud of her Hungarian heritage, and was a wonderful cook and baker. She loved playing games, especially Bingo, loved to color pictures of any kind and, in her younger days, loved to paint. She loved her flowers and plants and definitely had a green thumb! She loved watching sports, but her favorites were golf and the Steelers, always keeping up with current scores.

She is survived by her daughter, Janet (the late Jerry) Kunkel; grandson, Ryan Kunkel; nieces, Joanne Barto-Hanlon, Barbara Devine and Lucy Sprinkle; great-nieces and nephews; and her dear friend, Suzanne Murray.

In addition to her husband, son (Richard), and parents, she was predeceased by brothers, John, Bill and Elmer; and sisters, Helen and Margaret.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, August 29, 2025 at 10:30 AM at the St. Therese of Lisieux Church of the St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Munhall. Family and friends are welcome to visit with the family from 10 AM until the time of Mass. EVERYONE PLEASE MEET AT THE CHURCH. Private Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, West Mifflin.

Our family would like to extend our deepest gratitude and blessings to the staff at Eldercrest, as well as AHN Hospice Services for the compassionate care given to “Miss Irene” during her time there.

Good Night Irene! May you rest in God’s peace.
