John Dindak Obituary

Surrounded by love and his family, John went peacefully home to be with Jesus on May 22, 2025 at the age of 97.

He is reunited with his beloved wife of 58 years, Elizabeth “Betty Jane” (Jasko) Dindak and his daughter, Dianne (Dindak) Drish. John was the loving father of John G. (Linda) Dindak, Robert (Lisa) Dindak and Lisa (Glenn) Guckes; proud pap of Johnathan (Jessie) Dindak, Alisha (Chad) Metz, Elizabeth (Matt) Swackhammer, Rachel Dindak, Jacob Dindak, Danielle (Noah Zelkind) Dindak and Sarah (Luke) Merhaut; special “G-Pap” of Cole, Logan, Noah, Zachary, Maxine, Mia and Emily; cherished brother of Michael (late Shirley) Dindak, Donald (Eileen) Dindak and the late Andrew (late Rosemary) Dindak; brother in law of John (Carol) Jasko, and the late Ted Jasko and Frank (Diddy) Jasko; he is also survived by generations of nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends. The firstborn of the late John and Elizabeth (Kocsmaros) Dindak, John was born and raised in Homestead and was proud of his Slovak heritage.

A Veteran of the Navy, he proudly served during both WWII and the Korean War where he was stationed on the Destroyer USS Turner. After his military service, he worked for US Steel Homestead Works as an expeditor, with over 40 years of service.

John dedicated his life to serve his community of West Homestead and to public service. His love and dedication for his community was known to all. His involvement began with him becoming a member of borough council and then being elected as Mayor where he proudly served in that position from 1972 until his retirement in September of 2023. John had many accomplishments over the span of his tenure, touching countless lives by helping the people of the Steel Valley and beyond. He was named “Mayor of the year” in 2018 and was the longest-serving mayor in the state of Pennsylvania. He was a life member of the Mayor’s Association of both Western PA and Allegheny County and served as a Democratic chairman for West Homestead. He was named an honorary member of the West Homestead Volunteer Fire Department and was also a co-founder and a manager of the West Homestead Baseball Association. He had a strong faith in God and was a life member of the St. Maximilan Koble Church, where he was involved with many church activities and the seniors group.

He wore many hats over his years, from family man, community leader, to a comedian who was always quick with a joke or comeback. He had a passion for making people laugh and had a unique way of doing it. Always ready for a trip, which we all knew was to the casino, where he could have easily been voted “mayor” at any casino he visited. He may not have won as much as he would have liked, but we would like to think that we as a family and his friends were the real winners because we won the jackpot by having him in our lives, not only for who he was, but for as long as we were blessed to have him.

He has left behind a legacy not only of his dedication to his community but also the legacy of family. He has instilled in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the importance of family, faith, love, and involvement. The memories we have will be cherished forever.
