Laura Gloria (Messineo) Monahan

Our dear mother, Laura G. Monahan, sadly passed away on November 23, 2023. She lived an amazing 100 years and all who knew her were touched by her love, strength, kindness, and grace.

She was fiercely proud of her Italian heritage as a second generation American, the daughter of Philip Messineo and Marie Salvaggio, who immigrated from Italy in the early 1900’s.  She was a 1941 graduate of Taylor Allderdice  High  School in Pittsburgh, PA. She married the love of her life, William J. Monahan on March 5, 1946; he tragically passed on March 4, 1968; she never remarried, devoting her entire life to him and their four children, Diane Turf, Gary Monahan, Pamela Kamensky, and Robert Monahan.

She lived in Pittsburgh her entire life and was a single mother at a time when that was very uncommon. With her deep love of family and determination to raise and provide for her family on her own, she started working in 1968 as a teller for Melon Bank and then in customer service for twenty years with USS/Carnegie Gas, until she retired in 1998. She then worked part-time at the Jewish Community Center of Pittsburgh until she fully retired in 2012. 

She is survived by her four children and their families, her ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. They were the center of her life and are forever grateful for her love, courage, and devotion to family through the many challenges, joys, and family gatherings. She was a genuine and loving matriarch for her family, and she will be forever in our hearts.

Family and friends will be received on Friday, December 1, 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the SAVOLSKIS-WASIK-GLENN FUNERAL HOME, INC., 3501 Main Street, Munhall, PA 15120. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, December 2, 10 AM, at the St. Therese of Lisieux Church of the St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Munhall. Interment will follow at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Pittsburgh. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org/pa).
