Lois Jean Dolney Obituary

Lois Jean Dolney
October 7, 1930 - November 9, 2023
93 Years Old

Sadly, Lois Jean passed away on November 9, 2023 at the age of 93. Jean was a lifelong resident of West Mifflin, daughter of the late Michael and Elizabeth Reidosh; beloved wife of the late Julius “Jules” Dolney of 71 years; mother of Dr. James K. (Christine) Dolney of Virginia Beach, VA, Bonnie J. Snyder of Virginia Beach, VA, and Gary J. (Maureen) Dolney of Irwin, PA.; loving sister of Alan M. (Elaine) Reidosh of Spencerport, NY; loving grandmother of Michelle L. (Jeremy) Burchett, Douglas F. (Alexis) Castor, Jason M. (Adrienne) Dolney, Matthew J. Dolney, Dr. Lauren J. Dolney, Mitchell J. Dolney; great grandmother of Brianna Burchett, Jeremy Burchett, Jr., Zachary Castor, Aleeya Dolney and Jessica Dolney.

Lois Jean was known to family as Jean, Jeannie, Mum, Grandmom, Grammy, Great Grandma, and Zhaw Zhaw. To friends mostly as Jean. Co-workers at Kaufmann’s and The Central Blood Bank of Pittsburgh had often known her as Lois. Whatever the name, she was known as a kind, caring, hardworking, faithful, loving person.

A proud community member, she dedicated countless hours to the church, whether as a choir member, a dedicated member of the Bereavement Committee, or as a Eucharistic Minister.

A woman of many musical talents, she filled any room with vibrant warmth, both with her beautiful singing voice and with a variety of instruments. She was a delightful pianist, organist, accordion player, and was known to strum a tune on a ukulele. She was at her happiest when singing in harmony with Jules, her on the piano and him playing the guitar or harmonica. The heart of the home was certainly the love and the music.

Her talents didn’t end there. She loved to write, especially poetry; most who knew her were likely recipients of a card or letter with a poem penned specifically for them. And cards - birthday cards, get well cards, Christmas cards; never just a signature and pop it in the mail. No, a great deal of thought and caring always went into a personalized message, handwritten in her lovely script.

She was very proud of her on-the job accomplishments, especially at the Blood Bank where she advanced from an entry level reception position to the president’s secretary to overseeing several departments. Just getting to the job each day was a challenge, almost like a mailman, “neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail” kept her from her grueling walk to the first bus stop, only to have to transfer to another bus, and finally completing the trek with a walk to the office. The hardship didn’t deter her and she rarely missed a day.

The matriarch and backbone of the family, she helped to establish and maintain the family identity and cultural traditions, Food was an integral component, and she was the queen of stuffed cabbage, halushki, egg cheese, cheregi, kolachy, and most notably….nutrolls. Every family event, holiday, and special celebration was sure to include enough traditional culinary delights to enjoy with plenty of leftovers for everyone to take home.

Jean’s generosity and caring nature will be missed by so many.
