Michael "Sonny" Besenyi, Jr.

Michael “Sonny” Besenyi, of West Mifflin, left us Tuesday morning, August 27, 2024, at 88 years of age. He passed away peacefully after a prolonged series of medical problems. 

He was born February 29, 1936, the son of Mike and Helen (Zilko). He grew up in Munhall, PA along with siblings, Donald, Richard and the late Constance. After graduation, he joined the Air Force where he served for 11 years. Upon his discharge, he worked at US Steel until the big layoff. 

Mike loved football and was faithful to the Steelers and Penn State. His favorite pastime was listening to Neil Diamond and attending his concerts. He loved to sing his music and just last Wednesday during his final visit with his grandson, Donald, they sat outside in the sun and sang his songs. Mike enjoyed gambling in Las Vegas and just as recently as last year, Mike and Candi went there with Tracy and Donald. 

Mike was the former spouse of the late Elaine, of Topeka, KS, with whom he had three children, Mike, Jr., Robert, and Barbara Ann; and Genevieve (Silversmith), with whom he had two children, Tracy and Michael "Mikey." Together with Genevieve, Mike and his family moved back home to Munhall. He found love once more with Candace; they remained together until his passing. 

He leaves behind his grandson, Donald, whom he helped raise through his early childhood. Over the past 15 years, they became very close and he will be deeply missed by Donald. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Victoria, as well as grandchildren from Topeka, including Andrew, Tanner, Chance, Jennifer, Robert and Hantz. 

Family and friends will be at the SAVOLSKIS-WASIK-GLENN FUNERAL HOME, INC., 3501 Main Street, Munhall, PA 15120, on Thursday August 29, 2-4 & 6-8 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, August 30, 11 AM, at the St. Therese of Lisieux Church of the St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Munhall.
